DENTON: It was a clean sweep for JPII Golf team at the Argyle Invitational at Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch yesterday. Both Cardinal Golf Teams closed out the Fall season with wins. The Cardinal Boys were led by Senior
Chase Cutler and sophomore
Deuce Monroe, both with 74's. Monroe won the scorecard playoff for second place medalist honors and Cutler was third. Junior
Kai Leider followed with a 75, which was good for a tie for 4th.
Raghav Subbiah posted a 76, right on his tournament scoring average, and
Caden Oldham followed with an 86. The team total of 299 was good enough for a 22 shot victory.
Coach Smith spoke highly of the Cardinals, "I honestly can't say enough about these boys. They really come to play and are a tight knit group. I thought what they did at Texas Star was special with only 4 players. Even though we had Caden as a backup in this event, the top 4 continue to pull through and carry this team. Chase probably played some of the team's best golf of the Fall with his 5-under par back 9. He really showed grit coming back from a tough 7 over front 9. Deuce is starting to build his confidence and hit his stride as well. Rock solid out of Kai and Raghav, who is exactly on his tournament scoring average. We got some reps in for Caden as well. He needs to gain some more experience in competition this upcoming summer and I think he will improve immensely. 299 is a great score in high school golf, but they know they can do better. I challenge this group each time with three questions: "What did you do good?"; "What did you learn?"; and "What do you need to work on?". If they continue to ask themselves these 3 questions after each event, they will become very good in the Spring and have a chance to compete for our first State Title."
Not to be outdone, the Lady Cardinals wrapped up their Fall season with a team victory as well, to go along with a clean sweep of the Top-3 individual honors. JPII was led by sophomore
Sidney Gainor and senior
Sydney Lewis, both posting 79's. Gainor won the scorecard playoff for top medalist honors while Lewis was second. Senior
Madie Bailey was one shot back with an 80, good enough for 3rd place overall. Freshman
Sofia Denham posted a 97 and junior
Trinity Harris followed with a 104. The Lady Cards' score of 335 was good for first place team honors, 37 shots ahead of HSAA.
Coach Smith praised the Varsity Girls squad following the outing, "Our girls played great today. They continue to learn and move forward. The 'Big 3' continue to carry the team and it was awesome to see "Gaines" finally get her first high school win. She has worked very hard. I did not think the course was very difficult although in very, very good condition. Scoring conditions were prime and these three girls should all have been around 75, so they know they need to work harder on the little things to lower their scores. Sofia and Trinity are both learning with each event. They both bring fun personalities to the team, but we all need to be a little more serious when we get on the greens if we are going to compete in May. They know this and will all continue to work hard. I am very proud of all of the girls and it's always a positive to close out the season with a win and a clean sweep in the medalist honors."
The Cardinal Golf Teams will be back in action in January 2022 on their march towards the program's first 6A State Title.
