John Paul II Boys Golf wins Waterview Classic in Rowlett

Cardinals capture first trophy of the season with 24 stroke victory

ROWLETT:  The Cardinal Boys Golf Team was on the course on Tuesday at the Waterview Classic in Rowlett and they did not disappoint.  Coming off of a strong second place finish at the Denton Ryan Invitational two weeks ago, the team posted a score of 323 on the tough Waterview layout, earning a 24 shot victory over Frisco Heritage.

JPII was led by junior Kai Leider, playing his best golf of the young season, whose 79 earned him 2nd place medalist honors.  Freshman phenom Raghav Subbiah followed with an 80 and 3rd place individually, while junior Chase Cutler posted an 81, good enough for a tie for 4th.  Junior Myles Archibald contributed with an 83, garnering 7th place honors, and sophomore Deuce Monroe posted an 86, good enough for 10th place.  Freshman Caden Oldham played as an individual and posted a 90.

Coach Smith commented on the event, "This is a unique format where all 6 of our boys played together in one group.  This gives me the unique opportunity of watching and coaching all of the boys all around the course.  This course played very long as we played at about 6800 yards.  We usually don't play that long."

Smith continued, "I was a nice opportunity for me to see Caden play and see what he is capable of.  Our boys made a number of mistakes, but overall it's great to come away with the win.  Raghav continues to be very steady and I feel he will be the staple of our team as we move into the future.  Kai played solid and is starting to get his confidence back."

Looking ahead, Coach Smith agrees that the team is headed in the right direction but still has much to prove.  "This was a good warmup for us as our next event is at a very tough venue in Texas Star in Euless.  TCA is the host of this event and it will be the only time we see them before the post-season.  We will really get a chance to see how we stack up at the end of the month."

The Cardinal Boys are on the course again on October 29-30 at the Lanny Wadkins Invitational at Texas Star in Euless.
