About Sports Medicine and Athletic Training
The Sports Medicine program at JPII provides the highest quality medical care and practice and game coverage for all JPII student athletes.  We provide emergency care, prevention of injuries, protective devices, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.  The athletic treatment center is staffed by two Texas-licensed athletic trainers who work under the supervision of the team physician.  We have athletic training student aides who assist our teams with minor first aid and hydration.  We are inclusive of all types of students who want to help out and be a part of our program, and we aim to provide the highest quality sport medical services.  Our team orthopedic physician is Dr. Nick Douville MD with Baylor Scott and White.

Program History

The Athletic Training Department at John Paul II High School was established in 2006 to provide care for all Cardinal Athletic programs. Since then, it has grown alongside the school and its teams. Bryan Parfrey served as the first athletic trainer from 2006 to 2014, followed by Joan Hart, who became Head Athletic Trainer in 2015 and retired in 2023 after many years of service.

The Cardinal Athletic Training Student Program launched in 2015, giving students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in sports medicine. Today, the program is led by Head Athletic Trainer Alexis Soto, who is entering her fourth year at JPIIHS, along with Assistant Athletic Trainer Fernando Hernandez, now in his third year with the Cardinals.

Athletic Training Student Program
The student aide program is designed for students to assist Licensed/Certified athletic trainers in providing quality care to JPII student athletes. This opportunity allows students to get first hand experience in the field of sports medicine. If you are interested in medicine, enjoy a team atmosphere or being around sports and want to be involved, then the student program may be a great fit. Our formal applications will open in the spring, but we are always open to interested students! If you have any questions, please contact Miss. Soto.
