About the Program

The Lady Cardinals Basketball Program is led by Head Coach John Griffin, along with Assistant Coaches Jaleesa Gordon and Tyra White.

Coach Griffin began coaching girls basketball during the 2013–14 season following a long and successful career coaching boys basketball. Since then, he has established one of the premier girls basketball programs in the state, compiling an impressive 325–130 overall record. His accomplishments include 12 Regional Finals appearances, 5 State Final Four appearances, 4 State Championship game appearances, and 3 State Championships (2017–18, 2021–22, and 2022–23).

In addition to team success, Coach Griffin has helped numerous student-athletes continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level, including programs at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels.

Program Philosophy

At John Paul II, girls basketball is built on one core principle: Family.

Every athlete in the program—from freshmen to seniors—works together toward a common goal of becoming the most successful girls basketball program in Texas. The coaching staff is committed to developing complete student-athletes by challenging them on the court, in the weight room, in the classroom, and in everyday life.

The culture of Lady Cardinals Basketball emphasizes:

  • Character Development

  • Competitive Excellence

  • Leadership

  • Accountability

  • Team-First Mentality

Our coaches strive to create an environment where athletes are empowered to reach their full potential while learning lessons that extend far beyond basketball.

Year-Round Commitment

Competing in TAPPS District 2-6A, the highest classification in private school athletics, requires a commitment to excellence throughout the entire year.

The Lady Cardinals participate in:

  • Athletic Period Training

  • Off-Season Development

  • Summer Workouts and Competition

  • Preseason Preparation

  • In-Season Skill Development

This year-round approach challenges athletes mentally, physically, and spiritually while preparing them to compete at the highest level.

Our Motto

FTF – For The Family

FTF represents the foundation of our program. It reflects our commitment to one another, our school, and the pursuit of excellence. Every decision, every practice, and every game is approached with the understanding that we are playing for something bigger than ourselves.
