About the Program
In 2026, John Paul II Football will compete in the largest division of private schools in Texas. The district is TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) Division 1, District 1. Within our district, we will compete against Bishop Lynch High School, Nolan Catholic High School, Parish Episcopal School, Prestonwood Christian Academy, and Trinity Christian Academy, Legacy Christian Academy and Liberty Christian School. John Paul II Football is currently in its 20th Varsity season. Under coach Teague, JPII has reached the state final game in 2019. All Varsity games are played on Friday nights, while JV typically plays on Thursday nights. The team practices 5 times per week, including Saturdays during the season. Coach Teague coached the team from 2017-2021 before stepping away for 4 years. He now returns as the head coach in 2025.
Coaching Philosophy
"Our mission is to prepare the football player for success on and off the field and to give them an incredible experience while playing at JPII. I enjoy coaching for what sports has offered in my life. Being an athlete has enriched and strengthened my understanding of many important things. Through my coaching and administrative experiences, I have had the opportunity to shape and mold many fine athletes into champions... and not necessarily the kind of champions that crossed the finish line first. Champions conquer their fears, overcome their doubts and focus on what some would say is unachievable. It is a matter of understanding and then managing your personal strengths and weaknesses. It is my desire to build champions in three areas: Character, Academics, and Football. My coaching philosophy is centered on developing a positive belief in the attainment of realistic goals. It has been said, 'What you believe, you can achieve.' Although this is simple, it is accurate. With proper work ethic, reasons for motivation and proper planning, you CAN achieve what you believe." ~ Coach Teague
Program Goals
Our Mission - To become men of positive influence, dedicated to preparation, driven to perform, devoted to persist, powered by faith.
Our Motto - Outwork Everyone
Our Method - "The Cardinal Standard"
-
Work Hard and Improve Every Day – There are no substitutes or shortcuts for hard work. We will not settle for average effort. Only through daily dedication will we improve, knowing that small gains over a long time add up in big ways.
-
Be Unselfish – Football is the ultimate team game & we cannot achieve our goals alone. When we care about each other, our struggles bond us together. Our connections must extend beyond the field. We must concern ourselves with the well-being of our teammates in the classroom & in their personal lives, to forge the trust needed to win.
-
Choose Your Attitude – In order to become the best versions of ourselves, we must choose to attack each day with positivity. We will embrace the adversity thrown in our way, with the understanding that these struggles are the only way we will grow.
Our Values - We believe that there are two elements we always have command over, regardless of the circumstances: our effort & our attitude. Together, these two elements comprise the work ethic we expect from all of our athletes. We will outwork our opponents in all that we do.
-
Purpose – our "why" for doing what we do
-
Attitude – our mental state
-
Concentration – our ability to focus
-
Tempo – our sense of urgency
-
Commitment – our pledge to one another
-
Preparation – our methods to achieve our expectations
-
Expectation – our beliefs and intentions
-
Performance – our efforts and actions on game days
Program History
John Paul II Football began in 2005 with two JV teams. The inaugural season was coached by Mike Long. The following season, the Cardinals began Varsity play for the first time, fielding two teams, one Varsity and one Sub-Varsity. The Cardinals were led by Head Coach David Gaffney from the 2006 season all the way through the 2013 season. Coach Gaffney stepped down to take another position at John Paul II while Head Coach John Furin was hired and coached 3 seasons from 2014 to 2016. The following season George Teague was hired as Head Coach and Athletic Director. Coach Teague led the Cardinals to new heights in his four seasons at the helm, including the first district wins in program history (an 11OT win over Bishop Dunne, and a 21-13 win over Bishop Lynch), and a thrilling run to the State Final in 2019 that included wins over Central Catholic, Nolan Catholic, and San Antonio Antonian Prep. Coach Teague stepped down following the 2020 season to focus on his Athletic Director duties and brought in Head Coach Mario Edwards for one season, guiding the Cardinals to a 1-8 season in 2021. Current Head Coach Nick Schiele was promoted in May of 2022, the first alumni to become a head coach at John Paul II. Schiele is no stranger to the Cardinals, having played three seasons for JPII in 2005-2007, and has been an assistant coach at the school since 2012.
