PLANO: The Varsity Tennis team competed against TCA on Tuesday afternoon in the start of TAPPS play. The Cardinals, coming off of a district championship for the Varsity Boys last season and a runner-up finish from the Varsity Girls in 2021, hope to repeat last year's success.
In singles play, John Paul II handled business with ease against the Trojans, sweeping all four matches. #1 boys single
Jake Vo did not concede a game in his match against Daniel Baker from TCA winning 6-0, 6-0, and
Nataly Montemayor passed her first district test with flying colors, taking care of Mary-Michael, Graham 6-2, 6-1. Boys #2 single
Jonas Aronsson never trailed in his match versus Carson Sheldon, coming out victorious 6-2, 6-1. Girls #2 single
Valeria Gonzalez was dominant in her match against Francesca Arenas and only lost one game, capturing the 6-0, 6-1 win.
It was a different story in doubles play for the Cardinals, who kept things close but ultimately came up short against TCA. The boys top doubles pair of
Aaron Keith and
Ryan Ward went to a third set tiebreaker after fighting back in the second set, but were unable to upset their TCA opponents, 4-6, 7-5, 1(7).
Lindsay Keith and
Sofia Moldovan showed heart but fell to the Trojans 6-0, 6-2, as did
Valentina Navetta and
Riley Nelson. Alex Christmas and
Torie Pensado certainly made things interesting in their doubles match, but were also upended 7-5, 6-1. Head Coach
Sally Frame commented that the new pairing between Christmas and Pensado showed sparks of brilliance, and liked in particular their scrappy play.
The Trojans took the overall win 6-4, but the Cardinals have no reason to be discouraged after their first district outing. JPII will now look ahead to its match on Tuesday next week against Prestonwood, back at the East Sports Complex.
