PLANO: The Varsity Tennis team hosted Frisco Legacy Christian on Tuesday evening in a friendly exhibition between the two TAPPS talents. The Cardinals, coming off of a strong performance at the Wakeland Tournament last Thursday, returned home before the start of district play next week. This marked the first time this season that the entire Cardinal tennis team played, from senior captain Jake Vo (9.37 UTR) to the team's newest freshman players. With perfect weather and a gorgeous setting sun as the backdrop, the two teams battled into the night.
Highlights from Tuesday's matched include smart steady play from sophomore Valeria Gonzalez, who knocked off both the #2 and #3 Legacy Christian girls in singles action. Jake Vo and Sophia Polanski put on a show in a thrilling co-ed matchup (6-3, 6-1), and the Eagles #1 singles held her own against Jonas Aronsson later on (7-5, 6-2).
Junior Addison Crocker dominated in doubles, winning both of her matches in 3rd set tiebreakers, the first match paired with freshman Jessica Moeder and the second match paired with Audrey Frey, and sophomore Riley Nelson and junior Alex Christmas held their foes to just one game (6-1, 6-0). Keegan Conaway and Alex Rossigno played with real chemistry, shutting out their opponents 6-0, 6-0. In boys doubles-action, seniors Ryan Ward and Aaron Keith took care of business against the Eagles top pair 6-0, 6-1.
John Paul II was set to compete in the Coppell Tournament this weekend before the Winter weather forced a cancellation, and will now turn its focus to the start of district play next week when the Cardinals host Trinity Christian Academy on Tuesday starting at 4:30pm.
