FRISCO: The Varsity Tennis took its top talent to the Frisco Wakeland Invitational tournament on Thursday. JPII, coming off of a friendly against Anna on Tuesday earlier this week, looked sharp in an all-day marathon against some of the best players in Frisco ISD.
Jonas Aronsson highlighted the Boys Singles division, taking home Silver after a tough 9-7 loss in the final. Thirty-two boys were in the event.
Nataly Montemayor and
Valeria Gonzalez, both sophomores, advanced to the finals to play each other but did not play the Championship match because both players had injuries.
Lindsay Keith and
Sofia Moldovan, playing as the top Girls Doubles pair for John Paul II, took 2nd Place in the Girls Doubles division. The two sophomores went undefeated against Anna earlier in the week and kept rolling in Thursday's tournament, winning three matches before losing in the final 8-4 to an experienced Wakeland duo. Keith/Moldovan are a new combo and are improving with each match they play, according to head coach
Sally Frame.
Frame also noted that the mixed doubles teams have been working hard on volleys and serves on the practice courts and both teams had big first round wins. Juniors
Alex Rossigno and
Keegan Conaway have played well together early in the season, and seniors
Torie Pensado and
Will Dawson are getting better daily.
The Cardinals will compete next on Tuesday, February 1st when they host Frisco Legacy Christian in a TAPPS Division 1/2 friendly exhibition.
