ANNA & MELISSA: The Varsity Tennis team traveled north last week to compete in the Anna Tournament, hosted at Anna High School and Melissa's Z-Plex Sports Village. While the Varsity Boys team got their season started last week with a friendly exhibition against Jesuit, Tuesday's tournament was the first action of the season for the Varsity Girls team.
Sixteen high school teams entered with over 250 players competing in the all-day tournament, including A and B singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Nine different Cardinal players were awarded medals for finishing in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, a great start for both squads.
The Cardinals took home gold in both the Boys and Girls A Singles brackets. Junior
Jonas Aronsson won 4 matches to take 1st in the Boys A Singles division, a match in which he dominated, while sophomore
Valeria Gonzalez won the Girls A Singles division, beating fellow JPII teammate
Nataly Montemayor in the final 8-2. In an impressive tournament debut from
Donte Truong, the freshman took home 4th place in the Boys B Singles.
John Paul II also found success in the doubles bracket, let by the sophomore duo of
Riley Nelson and
Jackson Betz, who beat teams from Wylie East, Argyle, and Anna to take home bronze in the Mixed Doubles A event. The Cards' top Boys Doubles pair of
Aaron Keith and
Ryan Ward, both seniors, captured 3rd place Boys A Doubles with consistent serving and steady groundstrokes. Not to be outdone, junior
Keegan Conaway and sophomore
Lindsay Keith also won 3rd place by defeating teams from Argyle, Wylie East, and Eaton in the Girls A Doubles event.
The Cardinal Tennis team is back on the court this week with a home match against Anna on Tuesday before hitting the road once more to compete in the Frisco Wakeland Tournament on Thursday.
