ADDISON: The Varsity Track & Field team competed in the TAPPS District Championships at Trinity Christian Academy on Wednesday. The Cardinals brought their A-game, knowing that the top four athletes in each event would qualify for the Regional Meet next week at Liberty Christian School.
The story of the day was captain
Markus Christie, who took 1st in all three events that he competed in, as well as breaking his own school records in the 200m and 400m races. Christie ran a 21.96 in the 200m, and shaved nearly a second off of his best time in the 400m, clocking a blistering 48.86, three seconds faster than the silver medalist in the event. Additionally, Christie tied for first in the 100m dash, registering an 11.03, just five-hundredths of a second off his previous best.
Lanie Meeks headlined the girls accomplishments, also breaking a pair of her own school records in the 400m and 800m. Meeks cut four seconds off of her PR in the 800m with a 2:21.30, good for second place in the event. The junior middle-distance runner captured 3rd in the 400m, clocking a time of 58.70, besting her current school record of 59.67. Meeks also ran with
Destiny Jones,
Emma Rodrigues, and
Juliette Jowid, as the foursome won silver in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:04.25, just seven-hundredths of a second slower than the current school record.
Rodrigues took gold in the 300m hurdles (45.42), good for second on the Cardinals' all-time list. She and Jowid also swapped spots atop the JPII program leaderboard in the 100m hurdles, with Rodrigues taking second in the event with a 16.23 and Jowid taking third with a 16.38, both school records.
Junior
Caden Kitler qualified for Regionals in both throwing events, notching a 118-02 in the discus and a 49-02.75 in the shot put.
Luke Jackson is also headed to the Regional meet after throwing a 106-08 in the discus, as is
Sydney Kitler, who threw a 24-09.50 in the shot put as a freshman.
Two Lady Cardinal high jumpers are headed to Argyle next week after freshman
Evelyn Hernandez and senior
Jadyn Otto both successfully cleared five feet in the event, finishing third and fourth respectively. Freshman
Sydney Magennis took silver in the triple jump, clearing 33 feet and 5 inches, sophomore Gianny Reny finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 16-02.00, and freshman
Jacob Carlson placed 4th in the triple jump (37-07.00). The team was also excited to bring back the pole vault this season, and freshman
Alex Foster nabbed a bronze medal in the event with a height of 8-06.00.
A pair of freshman Cardinal distance runners found success as well.
Nolan Zaby placed second in the 3200m (11:00.15), shaving 12.5 seconds off his PR this season, and
Marcelo Villegas placed third in the 1600m (5:01.99), bumping him to seventh on the program record list. Two more Cards made the list, each taking 4th in the 400m race, as
Destiny Jones (59.55) and
Brayden Wolfson (53.03) both turned in PRs at the district meet.
As a team, the Varsity Boys finished 4th overall and the Varsity Girls also finished in 4th place. In all, seventeen different athletes qualified in eighteen different events for the TAPPS Regional Championships, including four freshman girls and three freshman boys. The Cardinals now have seven days to fine-tune their work before heading to Liberty Christian on Thursday next week.
