PLANO: The Varsity Boys Basketball team hosted Bishop Dunne last night in the regular season finale and wrapped up an undefeated district slate, going 8-0 against Bishop Dunne, Bishop Lynch, Parish Episcopal, and Prestonwood Christian. The Cardinals and Falcons faced off back in January where JPII handled their southernly neighbors with ease, winning 83-23 in the first matchup. Last night's contest was no different, as the Cards dispatched Bishop Dunne 90-44.
JPII jumped out to a 24-7 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, leading 53-23 at the halfway point. A strong third quarter where the Cardinals overpowered the Falcons 22-12 allowed the home team to coast the rest of the way, and outscored Bishop Dunne 15-9 in the final frame.
Keys to victory for the Cards were big advantages in transition points (31 to 4), points off turnovers (23 to 2), and points in the paint (36 to 18). JPII logged 24 assists on the night, showing off sharp ball movement and unselfish play, while shooting 40% from deep (14/35), and pestering Dunne's ball handlers to the tune of 17 steals.
Junior
Jaylon Tyson led JPII in scoring with 18 points in only 15 minutes, while also delivering two assists and three steals. Seniors
Jalen Tot (14 pts, 2 asst),
Nate Dominick (11 pts, 7 reb, 4 asst), and junior
Trey Spann (10 pts) also contributed in big ways on offense.
While going undefeated in their district schedule, the Cardinals have secured the number #1 seed in the 2020 TAPPS 6A Playoffs and will host Trinity Christian Academy on Tuesday, February 18th next week.
