CARROLLTON: The Varsity Boys Basketball team went on the road again Tuesday night for a matchup with Ranchview High School. Coming off of a big season opening win at Highland Park on Saturday, the Cardinals looked to carry the momentum into last night's contest.
The two teams were even at 20 points apiece after the first frame, but JPII turned on the heat in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolves 34-16 for a 54-36 halftime lead. The Cards dominated the second half, limiting Ranchview to just 13 and 15 points in the final two quarters to secure a 105-64 win. The keys to victory for JPII were big advantages in transition points (45-11), points off turnovers (31-7), and points in the paint (60-24).
The Cardinals were led by seniors
Jaylon Tyson (23 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast, 3 stl),
Manny Obaseki (17 pts, 6 reb, 11 ast), and
Nick Kendall (15 pts, 4 reb, 8 ast, 1 stl). Junior post man
Cameron Corhen was a monster in the paint, logging 15 points and 3 rebounds, while senior
Ashton Sturman provided scoring off the bench with 11 points including 50% shooting from deep.
"We came our a little flat and after the first quarter the score was tied 20-20," said Head Coach
Dan Lee. "After that we really picked up the defensive intensity which led to offense and played at a much higher level."
"
Manny Obaseki had 11 assists and
Nick Kendall added 8 more to really pace the offense. Having 5 scorers in double figures, 2 of them coming off the bench, is a real testament to our team play and a great sign for the rest of the season."
Now 2-0, the Cardinals are headed to Frisco on Saturday afternoon for a 2:30pm matchup with TACA Storm in the RJH Showcase at the Comerica Center.
