DALLAS: The Varsity Football team opened TAPPS district play on Friday night on the road against Bishop Lynch. One year after the Cardinals very first win over the Friars in program history, JPII repeated the feat with a 31-0 shutout win.
The Cards and Friars were both unproductive on their first two drives, but JPII finally broke through on their third possession of the game as senior RB
Grant Robinson (27 rush, 215 yds) broke off a 46 yard touchdown run as the clock ran out in the first quarter. After forcing another BL punt, JPII took over and put together a five play, 61-yard scoring drive, capped off by a 44-yard touchdown reception by senior captain
Myles Parker (2 rec, 55 yds). JPII added three more points with 1:22 remaining in the half as freshman kicker Jacob Carlson punched a 34-yard field goal through the uprights. After pinning the Friars back deep, JPII would add another score on a short drive as junior quarterback
Chase Washington (11-21, 145 yds, 3 TDs) connected with junior receiver
Tyler Bailey (5 rec, 71 yds, 2 TDs) on a 9-yard redzone strike to take a 22-0 halftime lead.
JPII added another score midway through the third quarter as Washington and Bailey hooked up for six, this time on a 22-yard post over the middle. The Cardinal defense got in on the scoring action in the fourth quarter as senior lineman
Sterling Martin burst through and blocked a punt out of the back of the endzone for a safety, putting the visiting team on top 31-0. In all, the JPII defense held the Friars to -11 rushing yards and only 57 passing yards, to go along with 10 three-and-outs while forcing nine punts on thirteen possessions. Junior DB
Terrance Brooks added an interception and junior LB
Jackson Barry scooped up a fumble recovery.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in TAPPS 6A-D2.
