Coach Nanez retired from public education/coaching in 2018 after 26 years. He
coached 16 years at Rowlett High School and started the cross country program in
1999. His cross country teams won 14 District Championships (8 boys/6 girls) in 15
years. In 2010 he had a qualifier for the UIL State Cross Country Meet. He was also
Head Boys Track and Field coach from 2001-2014 and won State Track and Field
championships in 2008 and 2009. Coach Nanez coached at North Mesquite High
School from 2014-2018. In 2017 he had 2 boys qualify for the UIL State Cross
Country Meet.
Coach Nanez has coached 3 Olympians Diana Pickler (Heptathlete 2008 – Beijing),
Marquise Goodwin (Long Jump 2012 – London), and Kyle Clemons (2016 - Rio de
Janeiro and Gold Medalist in the 1600 Meter Relay), 9 state champions, 12
medalists in State Meet competition and 15 State Meet qualifiers in Track and Field.
This is Coach Nanez’s 8 th year at John Paul High School. His boys Cross Country
teams have won 6 District Championships in 7 years. The boys best finish at the
TAPPS State Cross Country Meet was 5 th in 2023. The girls Cross Country teams
have placed 2 nd the past 3 years and their best team finish was 4 th in 2023.
Coach Nanez has been married 38 years to his wife Cara. They have 2 children, Nick
(35), and his wife Natalie, and Rachel (34) and her husband Steven. Nick is a
teacher/coach at Aldine Nimitz High School in Houston and Rachel is a Mary Kay
Consultant. Rachel and Steven also have a daughter Arya Rose (3).
