Girls Basketball avenges earlier loss to Bishop Lynch with 59-51 win

Lady Cards defeat #2 ranked private school to pull even with Friars in district standings

PLANO:  The Varsity Girls Basketball team played host to Bishop Lynch on Tuesday in a rematch between the two TAPPS powerhouses.  The Lady Cardinals fell to the Friars 40-51 on the road two weeks ago, but had a chance for revenge last night at home.  Entering the contest, Bishop Lynch had not lost a district game all season, while the Lady Cards' lone district loss came at the hands of the Friars.

John Paul II came out on fire defensively and built a 21-9 lead early in the second quarter.  As good teams do, Bishop Lynch eventually settled in and forced many costly turnovers.  By the time the dust settled at the end of the first half, the Friars held a 32-29 lead.  But as the Lady Cardinals have been doing all season long, they made several key halftime adjustments.  JPII only allowed 19 second half points while reeling off 30 en route to a thrilling 59-51 victory.  Senior Sydni Greene and junior Taylor Haggan led all scorers with 14 points apiece, while junior point guard Lydia Cooke-Wiggins contributed with ten of her own.

Now 29-7 on the season, the Lady Cards are just one win away from the second 30-win season under head coach John Griffin, the other being 2019-2020 when JPII went 34-6.  Last night's victory against Bishop Lynch was also the 100th in the last four years under the direction of Griffin, who is now averaging 25+ wins per season at John Paul II.  The Lady Cardinals will celebrate Senior Night on Friday this week against Ursuline before wrapping up the regular season and district play next week on Tuesday at Prestonwood.
